What Is Pigtail?_

Pigtails provide a connectorized interface for terminating fiber optic cables in patch panels or splice closures. They allow field crews to splice incoming cables to pre-made connectors rather than performing field terminations, which can be less reliable. Pigtails are typically single-fiber or multi-fiber and come with various connector types such as LC, SC, or MPO.

Technical Details

Pigtails are available in single-mode and multimode variants, with connector endfaces polished to specific standards (e.g., UPC or APC) to match the network requirements. The bare fiber end is fusion-spliced or mechanically spliced to the trunk cable fibers in a splice tray or enclosure. In GPU data-center deployments, pigtails are commonly used in fiber distribution panels to connect backbone cables to patch panels for scale-out networking.

How Leviathan Systems Works with Pigtail

During structured cabling for GPU racks, our field crew often splices pigtails onto the incoming fiber trunks at the patch panel, then routes the connectorized ends to the switch ports. This ensures clean, testable terminations without field-polishing connectors.
