What Is Patch Cord?_

Patch cords are typically used in data centers to link servers, switches, and other networking equipment to structured cabling systems. They come in various types, including copper (e.g., Cat6A) and fiber optic (e.g., single-mode or multimode), with connectors like RJ45, LC, or MPO. Their length is usually under 10 meters to minimize signal loss and manage cable congestion.

Technical Details

Copper patch cords for GPU networking (e.g., NVLink/NVSwitch) use direct-attach copper (DAC) cables that meet OEM specifications for impedance and crosstalk, while fiber patch cords for scale-out networks (InfiniBand/Ethernet) use MPO connectors for high-density links. The bend radius and insertion loss of fiber patch cords must comply with relevant standards to avoid signal degradation. In liquid-cooled racks, patch cords are often routed away from coolant lines to prevent interference.
