What Is Fusion Splice?_

Fusion splicing is the preferred method for joining optical fibers in high-performance data center networks because it produces a connection with minimal insertion loss and back reflection. The process involves precisely aligning the fiber ends, then using an electric arc to melt them, forming a continuous waveguide. The splice is typically protected with a heat-shrink sleeve to maintain mechanical strength and optical performance.

Technical Details

Fusion splicing is performed with a dedicated fusion splicer that aligns fibers via V-grooves and uses a high-voltage arc to melt the glass; the splice loss is typically below 0.1 dB when done correctly. The spliced region is then reinforced with a splice protector sleeve that is heat-shrunk to prevent bending or breakage. In GPU data-center cabling, fusion splices are used to terminate pigtails onto fiber trunks or to repair damaged fibers in the structured cabling plant. The splice must be tested with an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to verify loss and reflectance meet the OEM spec for the fiber type.
