What Is Loopback Plug?_
It enables verification that a transceiver or port can generate and detect its own signal without external equipment or a second device. In fiber deployments the plug typically contains a short internal fiber segment that joins the transmit and receive ferrules of an MPO or duplex connector. The same principle applies to copper ports where the plug simply crosses the appropriate pin pairs.
Technical Details
The device is inserted directly into the port under test and requires no external power or active components. It exercises the optical or electrical transmit and receive circuits at the physical layer only. After the test the plug is removed and the port is returned to normal operation with its production cable. No torque is applied because the connector uses the standard push-pull latching mechanism.
How Leviathan Systems Works with Loopback Plug
Field crews use loopback plugs during commissioning to confirm that QSFP and OSFP ports on leaf and spine switches are alive before the production fiber plant is connected.
