What Is Under-Floor Pressure?_

In data-center facilities the under-floor plenum acts as a pressurized duct; CRAC or CRAH units push conditioned air into this space and the resulting pressure differential forces air upward where tiles are open. Proper pressure balance prevents hot-aisle air from being drawn downward and keeps supply-air temperature within the range required by the IT load. When liquid cooling is primary, under-floor pressure may still be used for supplementary airflow or for non-racked support equipment.

Technical Details

Pressure is measured with a manometer referenced to the room; readings are taken at multiple points because obstructions or uneven tile placement create local variations. Tile dampers or blanking panels are adjusted to restore target pressure after rack installation or airflow changes. The same plenum often carries power and network cabling, so added cable volume or new liquid-cooling manifolds can alter effective plenum cross-section and therefore pressure distribution.

During rack commissioning the field crew verifies that under-floor pressure remains within the facility’s operating band after new high-density racks and their liquid-cooling manifolds are set in place. If pressure has dropped, perforated-tile layout or CRAC set-points are adjusted before burn-in begins.
