What Is Neutral Conductor Sizing?_

In systems with non-linear loads the neutral may carry triplen harmonics that add in the common conductor rather than cancel. Proper sizing therefore accounts for the expected harmonic spectrum and any single-phase load imbalance. The relevant standard or OEM specification supplies the derating factors applied to the phase conductor ampacity.

Technical Details

GPU power supplies are switched-mode loads that generate odd harmonics, increasing neutral current above the simple arithmetic sum of the phases. Field practice often installs a neutral sized equal to or larger than the phase conductors when the harmonic profile is unknown. Termination hardware and busbar ratings must match the chosen neutral cross-section to avoid localized heating at joints. Separate neutral runs per phase group are sometimes used to limit the accumulation of triplen currents.

How Leviathan Systems Works with Neutral Conductor Sizing

During rack power distribution work on large-scale GPU deployments the crew verifies that the neutral conductors feeding each rack PDU match the calculated load profile before energizing the cabinet.
