The calculation accounts for fiber attenuation, connector insertion loss, and splice loss along the path. It is compared against the difference between transmitter launch power and receiver sensitivity as stated in the transceiver datasheet. Results guide acceptance testing during fiber installation or troubleshooting.
Technical Details
Measurements are taken with an optical power meter and light source or OTDR after connectors are cleaned and inspected. MPO and duplex fiber runs used for scale-out fabrics are tested end-to-end once both ends are terminated. Pass/fail is determined by the OEM transceiver specification rather than a fixed industry number. No torque is applied to push-pull MPO or QSFP/OSFP connectors during these checks.
