What Is Harmonic Distortion?_

It originates from non-linear loads such as the switching power supplies used in servers and GPU systems. The resulting harmonics increase RMS current, produce additional heating in conductors and magnetic components, and can reduce the effective capacity of distribution equipment. In three-phase installations the triplen harmonics add in the neutral conductor and must be accounted for during design.

Technical Details

Distortion is quantified as total harmonic distortion relative to the fundamental frequency. Passive or active filtering is applied at the power distribution unit or upstream to reduce propagation. Measurement is performed with true-RMS instruments that capture the full spectrum rather than fundamental-only readings.

How Leviathan Systems Works with Harmonic Distortion

Field crews observe harmonic effects during rack power-up and commissioning when multiple GPU nodes share a PDU or busway. Verification steps include confirming that neutral conductors and any installed filtering remain within the limits set by the facility power study.
