What Is Transceiver DDM?_
DDM allows network engineers to monitor the health and performance of optical transceivers without removing them from the switch. It provides early warning of degrading optics, such as low received power or high temperature, which can prevent link failures. DDM data is typically accessed via the switch's management interface using standards like SFF-8472 or CMIS.
Technical Details
DDM reports parameters including transceiver temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current, transmitted optical power, and received optical power. The monitoring is continuous and the data is updated every few seconds, with thresholds set by the OEM for warning and alarm flags. DDM is mandatory for most modern optical transceivers used in data centers, including OSFP and QSFP form factors. The accuracy of DDM readings is generally within a few percent, but exact tolerances depend on the transceiver manufacturer and should be verified against the OEM spec.
How Leviathan Systems Works with Transceiver DDM
During GPU cluster commissioning, we use DDM to validate fiber link health after cable runs and before bringing up InfiniBand or Ethernet fabric. A transceiver showing high temperature or low receive power often indicates a dirty connector or a bend in the fiber, which we flag for re-termination or cleaning.
