What Is Optical Loss Test Set?_

An OLTS combines a light source and a power meter in a single handheld unit, typically used with reference test cables to establish a baseline. It tests the total attenuation of the fiber plant, including connectors, splices, and cable segments. This measurement is critical for ensuring that the optical link supports the intended data rate and distance without excessive signal degradation.

Technical Details

The OLTS performs a bi-directional test at two wavelengths (e.g., 850 nm and 1300 nm for multimode, or 1310 nm and 1550 nm for single-mode) to account for wavelength-dependent loss. It calculates insertion loss by comparing the measured power at the far end to the reference power set during calibration. The test must be performed with clean, undamaged connectors and reference cables that match the fiber type of the installed plant. Results are compared against the relevant standard or OEM-specified loss budget for the link.

How Leviathan Systems Works with Optical Loss Test Set

During commissioning of GPU clusters, our field crew uses an OLTS to certify every fiber link in the scale-out network (InfiniBand or Ethernet) before connecting to the switch or GPU NIC. A failing link is flagged for re-termination or cleaning before the rack is declared ready for production traffic.
