What Is Computer Room Air Conditioner?_
A CRAC unit is a precision air conditioning system designed specifically for data center environments, where it removes heat generated by IT equipment and controls humidity to prevent condensation or static discharge. Unlike comfort air conditioners, CRAC units operate continuously at high sensible heat ratios, meaning they focus on temperature reduction rather than dehumidification. They typically use chilled water or direct-expansion refrigerant coils and are deployed in perimeter or in-row configurations.
Technical Details
CRAC units draw warm air from the data center hot aisle, pass it over cooling coils, and discharge cold air into a raised-floor plenum or directly into cold aisles. Temperature and humidity sensors in the return air stream modulate the unit's compressor or chilled water valve to maintain setpoints within ASHRAE-recommended ranges. In modern deployments, CRAC units are often controlled by a building management system that coordinates multiple units for redundancy and efficiency. The units require regular maintenance of filters, coils, and condensate drains to sustain performance.
How Leviathan Systems Works with Computer Room Air Conditioner
During Leviathan Systems rack assembly and commissioning, CRAC units are typically already installed by the facility team before our structured cabling and liquid cooling work begins. We coordinate with facility engineers to ensure that cold-aisle containment and airflow paths are not obstructed by our GPU server racks or cable trays.
