What Is Dust Cap?_

Dust caps are installed on both connectors and receptacles during storage, shipping, and pre-installation phases. They remain in place until the moment of mating to preserve the cleanliness of the polished fiber surface. In structured cabling, they are removed immediately before connection and often replaced on unused ports after testing.

Technical Details

Dust caps engage by friction or snap fit on common push-pull connector housings such as MPO, LC, and SC types. They cover the ferrule without applying torque or mechanical load to the connector body. In rack-scale fiber deployments, caps are typically left on trunk cables and patch cords until final commissioning to limit exposure in the data hall environment.

How Leviathan Systems Works with Dust Cap

Field crews keep dust caps on MPO trunk cables and switch ports during rack integration until the scale-out InfiniBand or Ethernet fabric is ready for turn-up. Unused ports in GPU networking rows remain capped between installation and later commissioning phases.
