What Is Cold Plate Fouling?_
The deposits increase thermal resistance between the GPU die and the coolant, raising device temperatures under load. Fouling occurs when coolant chemistry drifts outside the OEM-specified pH and dissolved-solids limits or when system filtration is inadequate. Over time the reduced flow cross-section can also elevate pressure drop across the plate.
Technical Details
Fouling layers form through precipitation of hardness ions, oxidation products, or migration of metallic fines from upstream components. Once initiated, the roughened surface accelerates further deposition and can create localized hot spots on the cold-plate base. Remediation typically requires a controlled flush with filtered, chemistry-adjusted fluid rather than mechanical scraping that risks damaging the micro-channel geometry.
How Leviathan Systems Works with Cold Plate Fouling
During commissioning of liquid-cooled racks the field crew verifies coolant clarity and loop pressure drop to confirm that no fouling has occurred after initial fill and circulation.
