What Is Busway Tap-Off Box?_
A busway tap-off box is a modular device that clips onto an overhead busway rail, drawing power through internal contacts and routing it via a hardwired or connectorized whip to a rack PDU. It contains a circuit breaker for overcurrent protection and can be installed or removed without de-energizing the entire busway, enabling live adds and changes. In data centers, these boxes allow flexible power distribution by tapping into a continuous busway run at any point, supporting high-density GPU racks.
Technical Details
The tap-off box uses spring-loaded contacts that engage with the busway conductors when latched into place, typically rated for currents up to the busway's capacity. The internal breaker is sized per the rack load, and the output whip terminates in a connector matching the PDU input (e.g., IEC 60309 or custom high-power). To install, align the box with the busway slot and secure it with a locking mechanism; connecting the box to the busway requires no tools, but torque specifications for the breaker terminals must follow the OEM spec.
How Leviathan Systems Works with Busway Tap-Off Box
Our field crews install tap-off boxes on overhead busways above each GPU rack row, feeding power to the rack PDUs that supply the H100/GB200 systems. We verify breaker ratings match the rack load and ensure the box is properly seated and locked before energizing.
