What Is BMC (Baseboard Management Controller)?_

The BMC is a dedicated microcontroller embedded on the server motherboard that allows administrators to manage the server remotely via a dedicated network interface. It operates independently of the host CPU and OS, enabling tasks such as power cycling, firmware updates, and sensor data retrieval even when the server is powered off. Common implementations include IPMI, Redfish, and vendor-specific protocols.

Technical Details

The BMC connects to sensors (temperature, voltage, fan speed) and control interfaces (power, reset, virtual media) on the motherboard. It typically has its own Ethernet port or shares a management network via a dedicated VLAN. The BMC firmware is updated separately from the host BIOS and supports out-of-band serial console redirection for troubleshooting.

How Leviathan Systems Works with BMC (Baseboard Management Controller)

During rack assembly and commissioning, we verify BMC network connectivity and perform initial power-on tests via the BMC before the host OS is installed. We also use BMC logs to check for sensor warnings or hardware faults during liquid cooling loop integration.
