What Is HGX Baseboard?_
The HGX baseboard is NVIDIA's reference design GPU module that holds 4 or 8 SXM GPUs (H100, H200) connected by NVLink and NVSwitch. The HGX is integrated into server chassis by OEM partners (Dell, HPE, SuperMicro, etc.) to create complete GPU server nodes. The HGX design standardizes GPU interconnect topology while allowing OEM customization of CPU host, storage, and cooling.
Technical Details
The HGX baseboard is a large PCB (approximately 20×16 inches for the 8-GPU variant) that hosts SXM GPU modules, NVSwitch chips, power delivery circuitry, and the NVLink interconnect traces. The SXM form factor provides higher power delivery and bandwidth than PCIe cards. Each HGX H100 baseboard with 8 GPUs draws approximately 10–12 kW and requires multiple C19/C20 power connections. The baseboard connects to the host CPU via PCIe Gen5 and interfaces with the server chassis for cooling (either air or liquid). The H200 uses the same HGX baseboard as the H100, enabling drop-in GPU upgrades without changing the server chassis or infrastructure.
How Leviathan Systems Works with HGX Baseboard
Leviathan Systems has deployed thousands of HGX-based server nodes across H100 and H200 platforms, with deep familiarity with the assembly, cabling, and power requirements of HGX systems from multiple OEM partners.
