Xarray Arithmetic Pairs Index Labels Before It Adds Values
Xarray's ordinary binary addition pairs values by shared index labels. Under the default inner alignment in version 2025.10.0, only labels present in both operands remain. In XA-23 below, two length-three arrays produce two labeled sums: 202 at label 20 and 303 at label 30. Equal lengths, stored positions or one matching number cannot establish which observations were paired.
Distinguish the axis, its labels and its values
A DataArray carries array values, dimension names and coordinates. The dimension name identifies an axis, while an index supplies labels along it. Position is where a value currently sits. A reading of 2 can occupy the second position and carry observation label 20: those are three different pieces of information.
Xarray uses dimension names for broadcasting. Along a shared indexed dimension, ordinary binary arithmetic matches labels. Equal lengths alone establish neither a shared dimension nor a shared set of observation identities.
This explanation uses Xarray 2025.10.0 and non-in-place addition of two one-dimensional DataArrays. Each has the dimension sample and an ordinary unique one-dimensional index coordinate also named sample. The arithmetic join is the default inner. These premises identify the particular operation whose pairings the buyer needs to understand.
XA-23: two length-three inputs with different observation sets
XA-23 is a fictional arithmetic example, with invented readings in a common additive unit. No Xarray execution, captured dataset or model evaluation is claimed. Stipulate that the two readings bearing the same observation label are appropriate quantities to add.
Input A lists labels 10, 20 and 30, with values 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Input B lists labels 30, 20 and 40, with values 300, 200 and 400 respectively. Thus B's first value, 300, belongs to observation 30. The labels are identity keys in this example, rather than measurements to add.
Both inputs contain three entries along sample. Their observation sets differ: A includes 10, while B includes 40. Their stored orders differ too: observation 30 occupies A's third position and B's first. A length comparison reveals neither difference.
Coordinate loss creates three different pairings
Now define a separate hypothetical operation: discard the coordinates, retain each input's current value order and add the resulting bare arrays by position. A contributes 1, 2 and 3; B contributes 300, 200 and 400.
The first positional sum is 1 + 300 = 301, combining values that originally belonged to labels 10 and 30. The second is 2 + 200 = 202, combining two values from label 20. The third is 3 + 400 = 403, combining values from labels 30 and 40. The positional output is therefore 301, 202 and 403.
The middle number agrees with the label-aware result because that pair shares both position and identity. It says nothing about the first and third pairs. A comparison of one matching value would overlook both mismatches and the changed output population.
Attaching A's original labels to those three sums would not restore the lost correspondence. In particular, placing 301 under label 10 would conceal that its B contribution came from observation 30. A result needs an accurate account of its contributors as well as numbers that can be added.
Identify the contract behind the supplied result
The tagged 2025.10.0 options source initializes arithmetic_join to inner. Other settings can change the arithmetic join, so a release name alone does not establish the setting used for a supplied calculation. The align reference distinguishes inner, which uses the intersection, from exact, which rejects unequal indexes. Equal sizes do not establish index equality.
The automatic-alignment rule concerns index coordinates. Other coordinates do not receive that alignment, and conflicting non-index coordinates can be dropped. The mere presence of an auxiliary coordinate therefore does not establish that it selected the pairs.
In-place arithmetic such as += has no automatic alignment between arguments. Its behavior must not be inferred from this ordinary-addition example. If labels for a dimension are absent on either operand, matching dimensions must have the same size; that size requirement cannot reconstruct an omitted observation identity.
Choose the handoff by the observation pairs it preserves
For a supplied calculation, have the appointed data or application provider connect each result label to the two input label/value pairs that contributed to it. Identify the operation, dimension names, relevant indexes, library version and effective arithmetic-join setting at the point of calculation. Evidence about the source files leaves a gap if an intervening export discarded the coordinates.
A request for the sums over XA-23's shared identities is answered by the two labeled results. A request covering every A observation still has label 10 unresolved. A request covering every identity in either input also has label 40 unresolved. The successful calculation cannot decide which of those populations the consumer required.
The programmatic match is label equality under the stated premises. It does not establish compatible physical units, common sampling meaning or scientific registration. Those relationships need evidence from the responsible data and scientific owners.
The related NetCDF article addresses whether supplied values are packed codes, decoded quantities or missing positions. The HDF5 article addresses whether logical positions obtain values from their backing sources. Those earlier interpretation and availability questions can be resolved while the arithmetic pairing question remains open. Retain the identity-to-contributor relationship through the actual consumer handoff.
Discuss a separate physical equipment installation
If the wider scientific-AI project also needs equipment installation, Leviathan's Rack-and-Stack & Colocation Installation service provides a route to discuss agreed mounting, physical IT cabling, labels and installation records. Use the related project inquiry with a nonconfidential equipment, rack, site and connection outline to discuss scope and availability.
That inquiry concerns the equipment installation. Xarray behavior, data preparation and scientific input acceptance remain with the appointed data and software providers.
