Liquid-Cooled Network Switches: Expand the Rack Integration Brief Beyond the GPUs

Technical contentPublished Updated

A liquid-cooled network switch needs its own place in the rack integration brief. Assign its liquid, power, network and service-access interfaces to named owners alongside the GPU equipment. NVIDIA's Q3450-LD illustrates why: its liquid-cooled CPO chassis differs from the air-cooled Q3400-RA and Q3401-RD even though all three are described as 4U, 144-port XDR systems. A GPU-only cooling scope leaves that switch's requirements unresolved.

Identify the complete switch before comparing the installation

Begin with the manufacturer's full model, SKU, configuration and applicable documents. A Quantum-X800 or XDR label leaves several different chassis arrangements possible. The comparison below uses NVIDIA's public Q32xx/Q34xx hardware manual as read on October 19, 2026.

The ordering page is dated August 24, 2026, the Introduction August 21, 2026, and Specifications September 2, 2026. The ordering entry for Q3450-LD, SKU 920-9B36M-00MX-8ES, is marked Prototype. Confirm the status and documentation of the actual offered or ordered unit with its supplier; the public entry does not establish delivery availability.

The useful comparison has separate cooling, power and optical columns. Keeping the advertised height and data-port count constant does not preserve those interfaces. In particular, Q3401-RD demonstrates that a DC busbar arrangement can belong to an air-cooled switch.

All three are described as 4U systems. These are documented product distinctions, not interchangeable rack packages, populated cable quantities or an approved substitution.

Give the switch its own liquid interface

The Q3450-LD liquid-cooling chapter describes cold plates and switch-board components served by two concurrent parallel cooling loops, with two inlet and two outlet ports. Its interface specification names UQD04 on the male tray side and BUQD04 on the female rack-manifold side, and identifies Recochem OAT PG25 coolant. These details belong to this named switch's documentation.

That mechanism matters to the project boundary. Heat from switch components reaches the liquid system through the switch's own assemblies and connections. A document covering GPU cold plates cannot establish that these additional interfaces are included, compatible or ready. A common coolant label or a familiar coupling does not resolve the complete mating arrangement.

Ask the appointed OEM and cooling parties to identify the applicable switch requirements, approved mating assemblies, rack-manifold relationship and remaining site dependencies. Keep the switch identity on their returned information. Their assessment must cover the actual delivered configuration and operating conditions. This buyer review does not select hoses, size a circuit or reproduce the manual's filling and pressure-check procedures.

Review DC power and remaining air separately

The Q3450-LD ordering description uses a 48VDC label. Its Specifications page identifies two DGX-compliant busbar connectors and a 40V–60V input-voltage range. The ordering label and the documented input range answer different questions; neither establishes that an existing rack power assembly is suitable.

Return the selected rack power arrangement and mating-interface question to the customer's appointed power and OEM owners. They need the actual chassis, supporting equipment and applicable requirements. A proposal that previously allowed for a Q3400-RA's PSU connections needs a revised power package before being treated as the same installation.

The Introduction also lists two replaceable fans for Q3450-LD. The liquid interface therefore does not erase the air-side review. Obtain configuration-specific thermal information for the responsible facility owner rather than deriving a room-air allowance from a fan count or a headline power figure. The integration brief needs both thermal interfaces represented, with their unresolved requirements visible.

Rebuild the optical package at both endpoints

NVIDIA describes Q3450-LD as integrating silicon photonics with the switch ASIC and using direct MPO optical connections. Its data face consequently differs from a package built around pluggable OSFP optics. The cable chapter still lists transceivers for remote pluggable XDR switches and host adapters, plus a single-mode MPO12–MPO12 cable example. Removing pluggable optics at the CPO switch does not remove every optical component from an end-to-end link.

The reviewed pages disagree on physical connector count: the ordering and Specifications pages list 144 MPO connectors, while Cable Installation describes 72 front-panel MPO connectors supporting two XDR ports each. Retain this discrepancy and request the applicable corrected OEM port map before deriving connector or cable quantities. The agreed 144-port headline does not settle it.

The network owner should return the supported endpoint relationship, exact interconnect components and physical port identities for the selected unit. Record the management connections separately: the Interfaces chapter distinguishes RJ45 Ethernet management, serial console and an OSFP fabric-management interface. Physical cabling records then implement the approved map; they do not choose the fabric configuration.

Plan service access for the installed assembly

An empty rack elevation can show that a chassis fits in height while concealing access conflicts once cables and specialist connections are present. Use the selected mounting instructions and OEM access requirements to review the installed arrangement. Show the optical connection area, liquid and power interfaces, cable supports and the space required for the authorized service task.

The Q3450-LD rail chapter includes rack-mounted ejector bars. Their presence is a reason to obtain the applicable mounting and removal envelope, rather than treating a generic 4U rectangle as the whole assembly. Reconcile the selected kit and instructions with the supplier; this article adopts no rail-depth or aisle-clearance value.

CPO also needs an explicit service boundary. NVIDIA's ELS section directs external laser-source replacement, repair and return to its service representative and says users must not service those modules themselves. Define permitted optical patching and inspection separately from internal optical repair. A physical cabling assignment does not add ELS service authority.

Ask the responsible owners to resolve how authorized access is maintained with the actual connected equipment. That review informs the layout and work packages; it supplies no disconnection, isolation or removal procedure.

Work through a substitution that leaves the GPU count unchanged

Consider a fictional planning comparison. A network rack contains two proposed Q3400-RA positions. An alternative equipment sheet names two Q3450-LD units, leaves the server population unchanged and carries forward a brief saying that liquid work covers only the GPU equipment. The optical material sheet still describes pluggable modules at every switch data endpoint. The Prototype qualification above remains part of this hypothetical document comparison.

Both alternatives sum to 8U of switch chassis height and advertise 288 XDR data ports. Those arithmetic totals explain why a superficial review could miss the change. They establish neither equivalent network designs nor supported rack populations.

The revised brief needs five decisions. The supplier must identify the actual chassis and applicable documents. The customer's cooling party must address the switch interfaces in addition to the servers. The power owner must resolve the DC rack interface. The network owner must revise the endpoint and material package, including the unresolved MPO mapping. The physical planner must reconcile the mounting, routes and service access with those approved inputs.

The useful result is a visible set of changed responsibilities and missing inputs. The existing GPU cooling assignment cannot silently absorb the switches, and unchanged server quantities cannot close the network-rack dependencies. This example represents no customer installation, supported conversion or completed test.

Assign work packages by interface

Use a named owner and an identifiable output for each boundary. The same organization may hold more than one role, but the buyer needs evidence that the actual engagement includes it. A label such as rack integrator does not settle who supplies the switch, approves its fluid interface or controls internal optical service.

The assignments below are planning inputs, not a field sequence. Keep readiness evidence tied to the named switch and current document revision. Ask the customer's nominated approval owner which specialist records and unresolved decisions govern release of the affected physical work and subsequent energization.

  • Supplier and OEM: confirm the delivered model/configuration, product status, applicable mounting instructions, supported component relationships and service restrictions.
  • Customer-appointed cooling party: address the switch's liquid interface, its relationship to the approved cooling arrangement and the applicable readiness evidence.
  • Customer-appointed power party: resolve the selected rack power assembly, mating interface, facility dependencies and its own work authorization.
  • Network owner: release the physical endpoint map and supported interconnect package, then own the separately defined fabric configuration and validation.
  • Physical IT planner and installer: use the approved inputs for agreed elevations, mounting, cable routes, identifiers, accessible checks and handoff records; retain open dependencies.

Turn the interface decisions into a physical planning inquiry

For a planning discussion, bring the switch models and SKUs, offered or ordered status, proposed rack locations, available OEM documents, connection schedule and the customer's appointed specialist responsibilities. Identify the unresolved port-map, mounting or facility questions alongside the requested outputs. This gives the physical planning task a defined input set without treating those gaps as approved assumptions.

Leviathan's Physical Infrastructure Planning & CAD service can discuss rack layouts, pathways, point-to-point schedules, label architecture and installation documents based on the customer's approved inputs. Authoring capability, delivery resources, reviewer and formats are confirmed for the engagement.

Liquid-side design, installation and commissioning, facility electrical work and licensed engineering require the customer's separately appointed specialists. Leviathan does not perform, coordinate or subcontract liquid-side work. Use the service and project inquiry links below to discuss the bounded physical IT deliverables, requirements and availability.
