# Shielded or Unshielded Cat6A: Compare the Complete Copper Channel

Leviathan Systems — Technical content
Published 2026-10-20; updated 2026-10-21.

Compare the complete Cat6A component package with the appointed design basis. Category and shielding describe different properties, and correct quantities do not establish that the selected variants form the specified screened system. Identify each cable, outlet, panel termination and complete cord assembly; resolve discrepancies before treating construction alternatives as comparable offers.

## Separate the category from the construction

A request for Cat6A leaves the shielding choice open. Siemon, for example, describes its Z-MAX Category 6A family as offering both UTP and shielded systems. The same category can therefore appear on materially different component packages. Ask for the construction designation as well as the category, then identify the system and exact parts proposed.

Fluke Networks' January 2014 terminology note defines U/UTP as unscreened overall and at the individual twisted pairs. It defines F/UTP as screened overall with unscreened pairs. Belden's October 2012 naming table identifies the F/UTP screen as foil and lists U/FTP as individual pair foils without an overall screen.

The position of the U matters. In U/FTP, it describes the absence of an overall screen; it does not mean that the cable has no shielding. Conversely, the UTP portion of F/UTP describes the individual pairs inside the overall foil. Preserve the full designation when asking for an alternative.

## Understand where the screen acts

Electromagnetic interference from outside the cable and crosstalk between pairs within it are different noise paths. Panduit explains shielding as a way to mitigate external interference, with individual pair shielding also reducing coupling between pairs. An overall foil surrounds the group; individual foils put a screen between the pairs as well. Belden explains that balanced signaling on twisted pairs helps reject outside noise; unshielded construction does not mean the absence of a noise control mechanism.

That distinction explains construction, not a universal performance order. Panduit's paper investigates HDBaseT, and its measured rankings and distances cannot establish an Ethernet result. For the actual application, ask the equipment and design owners which construction is required and what site information supports the choice. A room described as a data hall is not itself an interference assessment.

The screen also has interfaces. Belden's January 2022 AV explanation emphasizes maintaining shield continuity through connectors. A foil specified only in the horizontal cable therefore leaves an important system question unanswered: what is the intended screened path through the selected terminations and cords?

## Identify the component system behind the cable

Describe the intended connection in physical order, including the final cords. For an outlet-based arrangement, identify the equipment-side cord, panel and its termination modules, horizontal cable, outlet module and device-side cord. Name any additional connection points. Keep that arrangement fixed while comparing construction alternatives; changing the topology introduces another decision covered by the linked device-connection article.

Siemon's copper-systems page gives a concrete example of system scope: the Z-MAX Category 6A offering includes cable, outlets, modular cords and patch panels. A system name is a useful starting point, but the quotation still needs the actual parts and quantities. It does not establish that arbitrary items carrying the same category can be combined.

Mechanical compatibility needs that detail too. Siemon's September 2025 outlet and panel guide lists Hybrid, Keystone and Panel outlet types separately, alongside UTP and shielded panel families. Obtain the documented combination for the exact proposed variants. A general family description cannot settle an unspecified outlet-to-panel interface, and this guide supplies no cross-brand compatibility claim.

## Compare two fictional Cat6A purchase packages

EX-SC186 is a fictional request for twelve equipment connections in the outlet-and-cord arrangement above. Its appointed design basis, EX-SC186-DB revision 1, requires the screened F/UTP component arrangement defined by EX-SC186-SYS-S revision 1. This requirement is an invented case input, not a general Cat6A recommendation or an assessment of site interference. All following part identifiers and system documents are fictional and have no relationship to Siemon or another real manufacturer's catalog.

The screened-system document specifies EX186-HF F/UTP horizontal cable, EX186-OS screened outlet modules, EX186-PS screened panel termination modules, an EX186-P12S twelve-position panel frame, an EX186-WS12 mounting kit for the twelve outlets and EX186-CS screened complete cord assemblies. It distinguishes EX186-CU as a U/UTP cord variant outside this defined screened arrangement. The requirement concerns the selected component combination as well as the cable construction.

Offer A/R1 names F/UTP horizontal cable for the twelve runs but describes the rest as compatible connectivity. The outlet modules, panel arrangement and both sets of cords remain unspecified. Offer B/R1 supplies a complete U/UTP alternative under fictional EX-SC186-SYS-U revision 1: twelve EX186-HU horizontal runs, twelve EX186-OU outlet modules, twelve EX186-PU panel termination modules, one EX186-P12U frame, one EX186-WU12 outlet mounting kit and twenty-four EX186-CU complete cord assemblies. Both schedules concern the same twelve connections and topology.

Return A for its exact package. A/R2 now lists twelve runs of EX186-HF F/UTP cable, twelve EX186-OS outlet modules, twelve EX186-PS panel termination modules, one EX186-P12S frame, one EX186-WS12 outlet mounting kit and twenty-four EX186-CU U/UTP cord assemblies. It cites EX-SC186-SYS-S revision 1. The cords comprise twelve equipment-to-panel assemblies and twelve outlet-to-device assemblies. Twelve connections with two complete cords each require twenty-four assemblies; the fitted ends and individual contacts belong to those assemblies and are not additional cord or termination-module quantities.

A/R2 has filled the component and quantity gaps, but its cord selection differs from its cited system document: EX186-CU was returned where EX186-CS is specified. Record that exact discrepancy and return the cord line for clarification. Counting twenty-four cords answers how many assemblies are offered. Checking their variant against the stipulated arrangement answers whether the proposed cords have the required documented component basis. The F/UTP cable line cannot resolve that mismatch elsewhere in the path.

A/R3 replaces all twenty-four EX186-CU cords with the specified EX186-CS screened assemblies and reissues the schedule against EX-SC186-SYS-S revision 1. All other parts, quantities and the connection arrangement remain unchanged. Within the fictional documents, this resolves the identified cord-variant discrepancy and gives the appointed design owner a consistent candidate package to assess. It is a clarification of the proposal; it supplies no evidence of a failed installed channel, missing bond or measured EMI.

B/R1 remains a complete U/UTP construction alternative. Its fuller schedule never satisfied the stipulated screened F/UTP basis, and A's clarification does not change that basis. Considering B requires an explicit decision from the appointed design owner on a proposed change to the requirement, with supporting application and site inputs. The buyer should retain B's alternative status while that decision remains open.

The comparison disposition is bounded: A/R1 was incomplete, A/R2 was identified but inconsistent with the specified cord variant, and A/R3 resolves that stated discrepancy. B/R1 needs a design-basis change if it is to proceed as an alternative. Send the corrected A schedule and B's proposed construction change to the appointed design owner; compare prices and physical scope against the resulting authorized basis.

## Check physical fit and installation inputs before selection

Compare the actual product envelopes. Ask for cable outside diameter, connector and termination space, cord exits and applicable bend requirements, then relate them to the intended panel, outlet location and pathway. A shielding acronym supplies none of those dimensions. Use the selected products' documents rather than assuming that every shielded cable is larger, smaller or easier to route than every unshielded alternative.

The appointed design owner still needs to review the complete package for the actual equipment, application and exact component interfaces. For a screened package, the responsible cabling and site owners must resolve the manufacturer's installation and bonding requirements, the site interface and who supplies and performs the associated work. Bonding and electrical details belong with the appropriately qualified owner and applicable instructions. The installation owner confirms the permitted work and material responsibilities; the check owner agrees the required inspection or measurement coverage, method and acceptance criteria.

Keep the returned schedule and its cited document revisions together when carrying that decision into physical work. If a later cord, outlet or panel substitution is proposed, identify the changed part and obtain the responsible owner's compatibility disposition. Use the linked cabling QA article to define the installation evidence and handoff rather than treating the component comparison as a termination, bonding or testing procedure.

## Bring the selected channel to the physical cabling inquiry

Use Leviathan's Structured Cabling & Fiber Installation service and the linked project inquiry to discuss routing, dressing, endpoint identification and connection records for an approved equipment and connection plan. Share a nonconfidential outline with the selected construction, exact component schedule, quantities, routes, site constraints, material supplier and required handoff.

Leviathan can discuss agreed physical installation using customer-furnished or separately sourced materials. Field termination and formal copper certification require confirmation of the actual capability, personnel, instruments, methods and criteria before inclusion. The useful inquiry identifies both the physical work requested and the remaining equipment, compatibility or site decisions needed to define it.
