# After GPU Installation: Dispose of Packaging or Preserve It for Returns?

Leviathan Systems — Technical content
Published 2026-10-20; updated 2026-10-21.

Start with the item that may need to leave, then identify the packaging its actual return requirement calls for. Buy the result still missing: cleanup of released waste, retention with a usable retrieval arrangement, or case-specific return preparation. A customer with a confirmed custodian may need cleanup and a packaging handoff; another may need that retention arranged. Compare the same required result before comparing quotation totals.

## Begin with the return that cleanup must leave possible

Two installed systems can leave very different packaging decisions. In this fictional example, S1 is a DGX B200 with a separately managed fan-replacement case. S2 is another system. B1 is the box and associated packaging delivered with S1's new fan module; C2 is S2's original complete-system crate. Ordinary installation waste is also awaiting cleanup. These are invented identifiers for comparing scope, not a repair or shipment record.

The customer wants S1's failed module returned and the installation area cleared. Those two aims can coexist if the cleanup instruction distinguishes B1 from released waste. Keeping C2 alone would preserve the largest container while leaving S1's actual packaging question unanswered. Conversely, calling every empty package waste would dispose of B1 before its purpose had been resolved.

Follow the decision through three questions: which packaging serves the identified item, who will keep it available for the required period, and which party will prepare or collect the return. Answering them lets the buyer choose a defined purchase rather than a vague promise to keep the site tidy or save all boxes.

## Connect each package to the item it could serve

Start with B1's relationship to the replacement delivery and S1's case. Its identity supplies a candidate packaging set to reconcile with the applicable requirement. Its exterior alone cannot establish that the associated pieces are present or in suitable condition. That determination belongs with the responsible supplier or return-preparation party using the actual case and equipment instructions.

C2 has a separate question. As S2's original crate, it may be relevant to a contemplated whole-system move or return. The customer must establish whether that purpose exists and whether the retained set applies to S2's actual configuration. It does not become suitable for S1's fan because it is larger or carries an OEM name.

This gives cleanup a practical boundary. Material whose disposal is authorized can enter the agreed waste population. B1 remains identified against S1's return purpose. C2 remains with its own disposition decision until the customer resolves it. The buyer can release one category without treating every unresolved package as either disposable or committed to indefinite retention.

## Use the named component requirement to resolve B1

NVIDIA's DGX B200 Service Manual supplies a narrow, useful reference. The Front Fan Module Replacement page, updated September 13, 2026, specifies packaging from the new module for returning the failed module. For the fictional S1 case, that explains why B1's delivery relationship matters. It establishes no requirement for S2's original crate. [N1]

The commercial question is now specific: who will establish that the identified B1 set meets the actual case requirement, and who will have it available for the appointed preparer? Keeping the outer box answers only part of that question. A replacement box, a confirmed usable packaging set and an agreed prepared return describe successive results.

The cited page also contains product-service instructions. Those remain with the actual authorized service process; this comparison adopts no diagnostic, replacement, handling or timing steps. The customer and supplier still control the case, any approved substitute packaging and the return decision. Purchasing cleanup or packaging work does not appoint an installation contractor as an OEM service agent.

## Give the retained packaging a route out of the hold

A retention arrangement needs an end as well as a place. In Equinix's published RMA model, inbound delivery, equipment replacement and outbound shipment are linked orders. Incoming equipment and its associated packaging are held until installation, and that packaging is then reused for the outgoing equipment. This named operator example connects preservation to the next activity instead of treating retention as a finished result. [E1]

Its inbound-shipment page separately describes optional packaging disposal. For an RMA needing box reuse, it calls for that need to be identified in the inbound order notes and states that boxes can be held for this purpose for up to 5 business days before disposal. That exact business-day period belongs to the published IBX arrangement. Use the actual destination's confirmed terms for another engagement. [E2]

Apply the lesson to B1: identify its custodian, permitted location, agreed holding period and how the preparer obtains it. If collection moves beyond that period, someone must resolve an extension or a different arrangement before the existing hold ends. A requested extension remains a request until accepted. No new storage duration or automatic right to leave packaging at a facility follows from this example.

## Compare offers against the same S1 return requirement

Offer A in this fictional comparison covers removal of released installation waste. B1 and unresolved C2 are excluded from disposal. The customer will arrange the retained packaging's next custodian separately. Offer B includes the same cleanup plus confirmed retention and retrieval of the packaging selected for S1, with return preparation separately defined.

The important difference is the responsibility left with the customer. If the customer already has a confirmed B1 custodian and a handoff into that arrangement, A may be the complete purchase it needs from the cleanup provider. Buying retention again would duplicate an assigned task. If nobody has accepted B1, A leaves a real gap even though its cleanup scope is clear.

B closes that gap only when its location, holding period and retrieval arrangement are actually confirmed. A promise to keep all boxes does not tell the preparer where B1 will be or how to obtain it. Nor does it resolve C2's independent purpose. Ask for B1's intended result explicitly instead of using the volume of packaging retained as a measure of completeness.

The comparison therefore reaches a positive decision without invented prices: use A with the customer's confirmed retention handoff, or buy B's defined retention result where that responsibility is still needed. Compare quotation totals after exposing any remaining customer work and separately scoped preparation. Neither offer establishes that the OEM has accepted the return.

## Define where the purchased work finishes

Follow B1 from retention to its next recipient. One engagement may finish when the identified packaging is made available to an appointed preparer. Another may include an agreed prepared package. Collection by the next party and eventual OEM receipt are later results unless the engagement expressly includes them. A box being present, a package being prepared and a return being received should have recognizably different completion evidence.

Choose the evidence that fits the purchased endpoint: the material identified and handed to the confirmed custodian, the retrieval arrangement supplied, or the preparation work actually completed and transferred to its named recipient. An unresolved condition or missing packaging element stays visible with the party responsible for resolving it. This keeps the next team from discovering that packaging retained meant only that an unidentified box had not been discarded.

The cost boundaries follow the same progression. Cleanup buys the agreed waste disposition and site result. Retention adds a place, period and retrieval responsibility. Case-specific preparation adds physical work and a handoff to the next party. This explains why two apparently similar cleanup totals may cover different work, without asserting a universal saving, insurance result or warranty interpretation.

## Bring the unresolved packaging result to the installation discussion

For a receiving, preparation or installation inquiry, describe the nonconfidential equipment and packaging categories, the applicable OEM or case reference, the site's disposition constraints and the result still needed. In the S1/S2 example, the useful brief says who will receive B1, which part of its return preparation is requested, and who still decides C2's purpose. Detailed customer and support-case records belong in the agreed authorized exchange.

Leviathan's Rack Assembly & Equipment Preparation service is the starting point for discussing how those tasks fit an agreed physical package. Packaging work, a holding location, retrieval resources and any return preparation need explicit confirmation for the engagement. The service makes no assumption of a Leviathan-owned warehouse, RMA agency or OEM appointment; supplier case decisions and site permissions retain their appointed owners.

Close the cleanup with the agreed waste removed and the retained material handed to its confirmed next custodian. Close any additional preparation against its own included result. The reader can then see both what the physical package accomplished and which later return stage remains with another party.
